Two Royal Society grant schemes that are now open for applications.
The Newton International Fellowship and Royal Society Wolfson Fellowships both offer funding
opportunities in the UK for international scientists. Please find more information about the schemes
below:
Newton International Fellowship
The Newton International Fellowship (NIF) is funded by the UK Government to support the UK’s engagement with the world’s most promising early career academics. The NIFs offered by the Royal Society provide an opportunity for some of the most talented post-doctoral researchers working overseas to carry out world class research across the natural sciences and engineering, in UK institutions.
In this round the two-year fellowship offers support of up to £280,000 of funding, which can cover salary, research expenses and associated overheads, plus relocation and visa costs for the Newton International Fellow and their dependents (partner and children).
Applications are open until 13 March 2024. Further information can be found on the NIF scheme
page.
Royal Society Wolfson Fellowships
The Royal Society Wolfson Fellowships enable UK Universities and Research Institutions to attract
outstanding international researchers to the UK’s scientific community, through one of two routes:
1) The Royal Society Wolfson Fellowship, which provides up to five years and £300,000 of funding, to be used flexibly by the research fellow and as part of their start-up package. This scheme will focus entirely on recruitment, enabling UK institutions to enhance their offering with a £300,000 fellowship award to for international research leaders wishing to relocate to the UK.
2) A Visiting Fellowship strand, which allows excellent international researchers a flexible 12-month sabbatical period at a UK university or research institution with an award of up to £125,000, to build and develop international collaborations and networks.
Applications are open until 20 March 2024. Please contact seniorfellowships@royalsociety.org with queries about these awards.
These programmes have supported many outstanding current and future scientific leaders from
around the world to spend a significant part of their career in the UK, creating and strengthening links that will benefit the UK now and in the long term.
